Being brand-new gardeners and having spent the winter researching…we are doing the Square Foot Garden method. Here is what I spend Sunday doing…

Well, it looks like our local ducks and geese approve of the pond! Not only were they practicing their “touch and go” landings, but our pair of geese from last year are back and enjoy weeding our lawn. They brought some friends too. More pics to come…once we can catch then in the act!

Such a well-written post…ha to share!
I had a big rant written but decided to make my Earth Day wish simple…. Let’s all put an end to GMO seeds and food. Here’s what you can do:
1) Urge the FDA to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. You have a right to know about the food you eat and what you feed your family. Go to http://justlabelit.org/ and sign the petition.
2) Do not buy seeds from Companies that sell GMO seeds. Which is basically the majority of them. Here are a couple of links to companies not to buy from: http://myfolia.com/groups/250-life-wants-to-be-free/topics/2867-companies-that-sell-monsanto-products/posts and http://www.garden-of-eatin.com/how-to-avoid-monsanto/
3) Buy locally from Organic Farms – Even if they don’t have the ‘Organic’ label but believe in sustainable farming and do not use GMO’s. I buy from the Amish in my area. They aren’t certified by the government but they also don’t use pesticides.
4) Spread the word…

Well, wife and daughters started some seeds indoors last weekend…for the first time ever. This weekend…we have some growth! Very exciting! The bits of old white snail shells you may be able to see in the pics are due to this topsoil being dug from the ground that is now our pond.

Yesterday, April 5th in Alberta…many folks are planting their gardens and starting to mow lawns…. We get half a foot of snow! It’s not cold, just hordes of snow….
Looks like it’s an inside day for the animals…. Petunia the pig will go outside in almost -30, but will not motor around her pot belly self in the snow this deep, even in my walking tracks. I have to plow the snow away for her to roam with the tractor. Spoiled brat!
Chickens came out, took a look around at this crazy April morning and declared today an inside day! Perhaps chicken-games and safety meetings all day today.
Happy Easter all!

So…apparently tracks are pretty tough…. Sledge hammer wouldn’t budge the pin. Grinder made some progress cutting through the bushing…and pretty sparks…. Today the welder comes to cut it out completely, and the new parts “should” be here next week….
At least the beaver enjoys the pond. So long as he only swims and doesn’t build…he can stay! The water level has certainly improve too!
